There’s a certain magic to string quartet. Not only for the immense amount of beautiful music that has been written for it over the past 250 years, but also for the dedication it takes to practice this art form. The four voices of a string quartet together represent everything that can be expressed through music.
Since the first edition in 2018, the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam takes place in the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam every other year. An eight-day festival where over 30 string quartets, composers, soloists, speakers, string quartet devotees and curious listeners from all over the world meet. An exploration of tradition and experiment; a voyage into the known and unknown.
The Muziekgebouw is the beating heart of the festival. Every two years, it buzzes from the over 50 concerts, talks, lectures, masterclasses and free fringe programme. Submerge yourself completely in string quartet from early in the morning to late at night.
Tickets sales for the third edition (28 January – 5 February 2022) start 1 March 2021.

“The greatest thing in life is when Utopia becomes reality. For me, that is exactly what happens at the String Quartet Biennale. For a full week, the Muziekgebouw and the area around are like a village, completely occupied by the string quartet.”
– Marc Danel / Quatuor Danel
The String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam was launched in 2018 and is the world’s biggest string quartet festival. We bring together string quartets from different backgrounds all over the world to create a dynamic, innovative program and a rich kaleidoscope of string quartet in our time. We commission, produce and present. From the early Haydn to world premières by today’s most renown composers; from the timeless late Beethoven quartets to long forgotten hidden jewels: one can completely submerge themselves in string quartet.
Every two years, for eight days, the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam is the worldwide hotspot for string quartets, composers, guest artists, string quartet devotees and curious listeners. Through a diverse and lively festival, the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam aims to connect new audiences to the age-old genre and wants to invite those already familiar with the genre to celebrate it and rediscover it. In over 50 concerts, lectures, masterclasses and talks, the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam explores the known and the unknown; an eight-day journey through the familiar and experimental.

This is the beating heart of the String Quartet Biennale. For an entire week the Muziekgebouw will be totally dedicated to the string quartet. Enjoying the venue’s generous space, spectacular architecture and fantastic acoustic you can almost literally immerse yourself in the world of the string quartet – surrounded by a breathtaking view across the IJ river.
The Muziekgebouw is about 10 minutes walking distance from Amsterdam Central Station. Tram 26, which departs from Centraal Station, stops at the Muziekgebouw’s door – or rather in front of its footbridge. A parking garage is situated under the Muziekgebouw and there is naturally also parking space for bicycles.
