The String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam was launched in January 2018 as the world’s biggest string quartet festival. We bring together over 30 string quartets from different backgrounds and ages from all over the world to create a dynamic, innovative program and to present a rich kaleidoscope of string quartet in our time. Through the centuries stunningly beautiful music has been written for string quartet; no other musical genre can boast such an extensive and solid repertoire. We do not limit our vision to the genre’s rich past, but give a prominent place to current developments, crossovers and innovation.
We believe that the string quartet is for everybody to enjoy, regardless of age, identity or background. We commission, produce and present. We inspire and encourage quartets to push the boundaries of the genre and to remove the string quartet from its traditional setting and reach out to new audiences. We scout, promote and foster talented young quartets, offer coaching and career development programs and champion young composers.
