50 for the Future

50 for the Future

In 2023 the legendary Kronos Quartet will have its fifty year anniversary. To celebrate this momentous occasion, the American Quartet commissioned fifty composers from around the world to write a string quartet, hence, 50 for the Future. These fifty pieces reflect the rich sounds of the world, composed by some of the relevant and diverse composers of our time.

In collaboration with the Muziekgebouw and the Ragazze Quartet, the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam proudly presents 50 for the Future Weekend; an entire weekend dedicated to the embodiment of 50 for the Future in Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ and BIMHUIS. Ten extraordinary quartets will perform all fifty new pieces in one weekend, a unique experience only available in Amsterdam.

May 6th and 7th: 50 for the Future in Muziekgebouw Amsterdam and BIMHUIS. A true must-see for the string quartet lover. The design and dramaturgy will be in the hands of Tobias Kokkelmans, dramaturge and director of the Netherlands Theatre Festival.

‘Each piece is a real piece, a real investment in making a future in music possible’
– David Harrington, primarius Kronos Quartet
