Beethoven
String Quartet no. 12, op. 127
The difference in atmosphere between the string quartet opus 127 and the quartets that follow, raises the question of what changed for Beethoven during the time in between. While the later Beethoven quartets are generally darker and full of turmoil, opus 127 is excited, almost cheerful. But every now and then, hints of introspection shimmer through. As a result this string quartet, despite its cheerful character, is never frivolous. It emits a certain weight.
Beethoven's late quartets are like books by Murakami or David Lynch's Twin Peaks. We can only understand them to a certain extent, but it is precisely this mystery of the unattainable, that genius hint of the superhuman, that creates an irresistible feeling of fear of missing out. An never-fading urge to fathom.
