Waltzing Matilda (arr. for string quartet)

During the Grass Roots we will present the three selected string quartets for the SQBA Residency, our development program for young professional quartets. For the SQBA Residency ’21-’22 these are the Belinfante Quartet (the Netherlands), the Karski Quartet (Belgium) and the Quarteto Tejo (Portugal). They each play their core repertoire and at least one work by a female or Dutch composer. The quartets are introduced by Mark Withers, one of the tutors at the SQBA Residency.

Since our first festival, the SQBA Residency has evolved into a kaleidoscopic development programme for string quartets at the start of their professional career. From 2021, the programme will take on a new form: a four-week course, spread over a period of one and a half years. The participating string quartets each have their own voice in the content and shape of the programme. They are challenged to reflect on what it means to be a string quartet; what string quartet needs as an art form to ‘survive’ and what they need as an ensemble to grow towards their own vision of the future.
